Around the Bend

This page provides a home for those odds and ends of items of general informational interest.

Items here are not policy or procedure nor is this page a platform for registering complaints. Hopefully what’s published will have value as a means to broaden our awareness of community and neighborhood activities, local news items and quality of life hints and tips that expand the Willowbend experience.

This is a call to homeowners to contribute in making "Around the Bend" an interesting and informative part of this website. You may recall "Around the Bend" was the name of our now discontinued Newsletter. Let’s resurrect its spirit here by submitting your articles for publication consideration. Homeowners are encouraged to send articles, photos, news of neighborhood happenings, or any other ideas how to make Willowbend a better place to live and enjoy life. Please submit your ideas via the Contact Us email or by mail to Rudy Stehl, 1307 Copperwood Drive, Osprey, FL 34229.

Recommendation for Painter

We contracted Chuck Rizzo to repair the step cracks on the side of our house, and to paint the exterior completely. He did exceptional work, and was a very clean and neat painter. We are very pleased with the quality of work he provided us and would recommend him highly to the community.

One Month Free Piano Lessons

I recommend my piano instructor to anyone who might be thinking about piano lessons. I want to share information about something that has given me great pleasure over the last 18 months since I began my bi-weekly lessons. My two grandsons, age 6 and 9, have also greatly benefited for more than two years. Up until now she has had a waiting list but now has openings, creating an opportunity for anyone looking to take lessons. Her classes are 40 minutes long, either weekly or bi-weekly and cost $34 per lesson. She teaches either from her home studio next door in Sorrento East just on the other side of Oscar Scherer State Park or at the Yamaha studios on Rt. 41. Please feel free to call me for a more detailed endorsement. For a limited time she is offering one month of free lessons.

Car Burglary

This is to alert residents that a bracelet was stolen from my Ford Expedition at 1243 Thornapple Drive on Saturday, November 1st. The bracelet isn't worth anywhere near $300. I was just married last weekend and this was a wedding gift from my wife. I can never get back the sentimental value that this bracelet has to me by buying a new one. I do not want to prosecute but do want my bracelet back so I can move on with my newlywed wife and life. Please contact me at 941.504.1668 if you know where I can find my bracelet.

Unauthorized Trash Disposal at the Recreation Center

It has been reported by residents that use the Recreation Facility on a routine basis, that there has been a frequent and continuing disposal of personal trash and garbage in a receptacle at the Facility. The contents of the trash (garbage) receptacle have been strewn over the pool deck, apparently by the wild animal life that resides in our neighborhood. This activity has contributed to unsanitary conditions and certainly unnecessary work by your volunteer neighbors to clean up the mess. Bringing and disposing personal trash and garbage at the Recreation Facility represents a violation of the governing rules by creating a nuisance. Residents that are using the Recreation Facility trash container as their personal garbage collector are asked to stop this activity immediately. Violators will be discovered and the appropriate remedial action will be imposed.

Gas Service Interruption

There has been a recent interruption of the gas service provided to our community by TECO. The necessary repairs have been made to the gas supply system and TECO employees have knocked on doors at Willowbend so they may turn on your gas supply and reset your gas flow meter. If you have been away from your Willowbend home and are returning to a situation where you have no gas supply, you must call TECO to have your service restored.

SAFETY NOTICES

Several of our Willowbend residents have experienced problems with corrosion of the venting system on the gas water heaters. There have been leaks and on one occasion, the vent bulb actually blew off the water heater, landed atop the car that was parked in the garage and damaged the hood. There was a lot of hot water sprayed around as well. Owners will be well served to inspect their water heaters to check for corrosion on the venting system. Repairs can be made by contacting a local plumber to replace the corroded parts. This action may help to avoid a serious event such as happened to one of your neighbors.

GATOR FEEDING is a violation of Florida Statutes. There has been a 6’ gator removed from Pelican Lake this past week. There was evidence of residents feeding the gator as the gator came right up to the trapper as though expecting food. Residents must realize that gators are wild animals and they do not become tame simply by feeding them. Please do not feed the wild animals. Residents observing those that are feeding the wild animals should report the activity to assure that they will stop the feeding. This is absolutely a safety issue as all residents; children and pets are in danger of an attack by a wild gator that is expecting a free hand out of food.

Fire Hazard

Hi neighbors, I recently discovered a similar problem to Ted Mailleres’ kitchen range vent (see below).

This time, however, it was my dryer vent which exits on the roof; it was clogged with left over caulking materials from when the house was built. This could have been a serious fire hazard.

Kitchen Range Vent

If, during the construction of your Willowbend home, you chose to have your kitchen range vented outdoors (rather than re-circulating the air back into the kitchen), you may want to check the exterior vent to ensure that it is functioning properly.

My vent was completely sealed shut with caulk which rendered it useless. I simply removed the caulk with a utility knife and the 'flapper' immediately began functioning in a normal manner.

I noticed that some of my neighbors whose kitchens were vented outside did not have this problem

Interested in Devil Ray Tickets?

I have access to great seats to the Devil Rays games. I’m part of a syndicate of ten members that share four seats in the 4th row behind the Devil Rays dugout. The GM sits three rows directly in front of us. Each ticket has a face value of $52 ($70 for the premium games, Yankees, Braves, Red Sox and Dodgers) but cost only $39.50 per ticket as part of the season package. While it is unlikely that premium tickets will be available, there could be other games available in blocks of 2 or 4. If you are interested, send me an e-mail, jmcaward@verizon.net and I’ll notify you when tickets are available.

Garage Floor Need Painting?

Nancy and Brian Gorden (Crane Prairie Way) just had their garage floor painted by a company owned by a reliable and professional young man. His company is based in a nearby community. He did a wonderful job and his price was fair and reasonable. If you have any questions, you can always email/call us - Nancy and Brian Gorden 941-918-1531.

Backflow Prevention Device Certification Update

As of mid-January, of the over 120 devices checked in the community by the “other Lighthouse” (Lighthouse Property Inspection Services, Inc.), in excess of 20% have failed certification. Such a high failure rate should attune all homeowners regardless of whether or not you have received a County notification letter that the quality of the domestic water in your home may be suspect. REMINDER: this issue is not an Association responsibility but that fully of the homeowner. The November 21, 2006 letter you received from the Board was a courtesy to alert you to the issue and provided to all homeowners - thanks to our property management company, Lighthouse Property Management (LPM formerly LHM) - a convenient means to assist in establishing a group rate charge for the inspection service. This arrangement was no longer in effect as of the first of this year.
